嘉庆《清一统志》卷287《嘉兴府一·关隘》：“海盐故城，……明宣德五年，巡抚胡概奏分海盐之武原、齐景、华亭、大易四乡，于当湖镇置县曰平湖。”据中华人民共和国浙江省《地名词典》1949年后“并当湖、永丰、启元等镇为城关镇”，则当湖镇即今平湖县治城关镇。
