按《景定建康志》卷16《镇市》：“水桥市，在江宁县归善乡。”《至正金陵新志》卷4上《建置志》同。正德《江宁县志》上：“水桥市，在县西南六十里，隶归善乡。”则市成于南宋景定以前，历元、明、清相沿袭。
据1978年《江苏省地图集》（内部发行），在今江宁县西南西水桥。
