金贞佑三年（1215年）置，属霍州，四年，属汾州①。治所在今灵石县冷泉关。蒙古至元二年（1265年），省入介休县②。

注：
①《元史》卷五十八《志》第十?地理一 汾州，中。唐改西河郡为浩州，又改汾州，又改西河郡，又为汾州。金置汾阳军。元初立汾州元帅府，割灵石县隶平阳路之霍州，仍析置小灵石县，后废府。至元二年，复行州事，省小灵石入介休。（中华书局P1377，1976年。）
光绪《山西通志》卷二十七《府州厅县考五》灵石县，“金贞佑三年，割隶霍州，仍析置小灵石县。四年五月，复隶汾州。元隶霍州。至元二年，省小灵石县入介休。” （中华书局P2460，1990年。）
②《大清一统志》卷一百十六?霍州 小灵石废县，“在灵石县北五十五里。接汾州府介休县界。《元史?地理志》：元初灵石县析置小灵石县，至元二年省入介休。旧志：旧有灵石口巡司因，故小灵石县为名，今冷泉关也，即唐冷泉驿。”",
