	西晋泰始（265年）置，属雁门郡①。仍治今大同市区。北魏天兴元年（398年）属司州，为司州治。太和十八年（494年）为恒州治②。孝昌二年（526年）废③。

注：
①《元和郡县图志》卷十四?河东道三?云州 云中县，“本汉平城县，属雁门郡。汉末大乱，其地遂空。魏武帝又立平城县，属新兴郡。晋改属雁门郡。后魏于此建都，属代尹，孝文帝改代尹为恒州，县属不改。”（中华书局P410，1990年。）
光绪《山西通志》卷二十八《府州厅县考六》大同府，“建安中，省幽、并入冀州……，立新兴郡于太原界，……而别置平城县于句注径南，往属焉。晋仍置幽、并二州，平城还隶雁门郡。……道武帝天兴元年，自云中定都平城，为代都。……置司州及代尹。”（中华书局P2511，1990年。）
按：《元和郡县图志》云：“魏武帝又立平城县，属新兴郡”。魏武帝即晋武帝，故确定平城县置县于西晋泰始元年（265年）。

恒州，“天兴中置司州，治代都平城，太和中改。孝昌中陷，天平二年置，寄治肆州秀容郡城”。领郡八  县十四。
代郡秦置，孝昌中陷，天平二年置。领县四。平城，“二汉、晋属雁门”，后属。
