蒙古初年以沃州改名。⑴治平棘县（今河北赵县驻地赵州镇）。蒙古太祖十五年（1220年），栾城、元氏两县改隶真定府。⑵太宗六年（1234年），宁晋、平棘两县改属永安州，次年复来属。⑶元隶真定路。⑷明洪武元年（1368年）十月属真定府。⑸同年州治平棘县并入。⑹领柏乡、隆平、高邑、临城、赞皇、宁晋等六县。洪武六年至十三年间，隆平县曾废。清雍正元年（1723年）属正定府。⑺清雍正二年六月丙申（1724年8月13日）升为直隶州。⑻
