隋开皇十六年（598年）置，属洛州，大业元年（605年）属豫州，三年（607年）属河南郡（1），义宁元年（617年）属弘农郡，唐武德三年（620年）属陕州，天宝元年（742年）改名灵宝（2）。治今河南灵宝东北老城（3）。
