秦始王十七年（前230年）置，属颍川郡，汉高帝五年（前202年）属韩国，六年（前201年）仍属颍川郡（1），天凤元年（14年）属左队郡，更始元年（23年）复旧（2）。东汉同（3），三国魏黄初二年（221年）改名许昌（4）。治今河南许昌东南张潘乡东有古城（5）。
