宋祥兴元年（1278年）分吴川县置，属化州（1）。治所即今广东省湛江市硇洲（2）。元至元十七年（1280年）省入化州路（3）。

（1），《宋史》卷90?地理六?广南西路?化州，陵水郡：“本辩州，太平兴国五年改。开宝中，废陵罗县。县二：石龙。吴川，本属罗州，州废，开宝五年来属。南度后，增县一：石城，乾道三年，析吴川西乡置，因石城冈为名。”（北京，中华书局，1977年，7册，2244页）。《嘉庆一统志》卷448?高州府?古迹?翔龙废县：“在吴川县南海中碙洲上。宋景炎二年，端宗崩于碙洲…立帝弟卫王昺为帝，…改元祥兴，升碙洲为翔龙县。元省。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，168册）。
（2），《读史方舆纪要》卷108?化州?吴川县：“翔龙废县，在县南百四十里碙洲上。”（北京，中华书局，1955年，5册，4426页）。碙洲今名硇洲，属湛江市。
（3），《元史》卷63?地理六?湖广等处行中书省?广西两江道宣慰使司都元帅府?化州路：“元至元十五年立安抚司。十七年改总管府。领县三：石龙，吴川，石城。”（中华书局，1976年，5册，1536页）。作至元十七年省。",
