梁天监元年（502年）置，为南巴郡治，隋开皇十年（590年）废南巴郡，县属高州（1）。治所即今广东省电白县东北大衙镇（2）。大业三年（607年）省入连江县（3）。

（1），《隋书》卷31?地理下：“高凉郡，梁置高州。统县九：高凉；连江，梁置连江郡。平陈，郡废。梁又置梁封县，开皇十八年改为义封。梁又置南巴郡。平陈，郡废为南巴县。大业初二县并废入。…”（北京，中华书局，1973年，3册，883页）。作梁天监元年置南巴郡，并置南巴县为郡治。
（2），《太平寰宇记》卷161?高州?茂名县：“废南巴县，在县东一百里。隋废县，唐武德五年取县东一百里南巴山为名。”（金陵书局，光绪八年刊本，29册）。《嘉庆一统志》卷448?高州府?古迹?南巴废县：“在茂名县东南。…，在县东一百里。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，168册）。宣统元年《广东地舆全图》电白县图：县西北有南巴岭、南巴墟、南巴村。（台湾，成文出版社《中国方志丛书》第108号）。今据此相关位置，定隋唐五代南巴县于广东省电白县东北大衙镇。
