晋永和七年（351年）置新宁郡，设南兴县为郡治（1）。治所在今广东省新兴县东北布龙村（2）。齐移郡治博林，县仍属之（3）。梁太平二年（557年）废（4）。

（1），《宋书》卷38?州郡志四?广州刺史：“新宁太守，晋穆帝永和七年，分苍梧立。”今领县十四：首县“南兴令，何志汉旧县。检二汉《地理》、《郡国》、《晋太康地志》并无。《永初郡国》有。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1193页）。作晋穆帝永和七年，分苍梧立新宁郡时，设南兴县为郡治。
（2），《嘉庆一统志》卷447?肇庆府?古迹?南兴废县：“在新兴县东北。晋永和七年置，为新宁郡治。梁陈间废。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，167册）。姑定于今新兴县东北布龙村。
（3），《南齐书》卷14?州郡志上?广州?新宁郡：“博林，南兴，临沇，…”。（北京，中华书局，1972年，1册，263页）。
