梁天监元年（502年）置，属清远郡（1）。治所即今广东省四会县北威整（2）。隋开皇十年（590年），废入清远县（3）。

（1），《隋书》卷31?地理下?南海郡?清远县：“旧置清远郡，又分置威正、廉平、恩洽、浮护等四县。平陈并废，以置清远县。又齐置齐康郡，至是亦废入焉。”（北京，中华书局，1973年，3册，881页）。《元和郡县图志》卷34?广州?清远县：“本汉中宿县地也，梁武帝于此置清远郡，中宿县属之。隋开皇十年废郡，置清远县，属广州。”（北京，中华书局，下册，890-891页）。今据此作梁武帝天监元年置清远郡，又分置威正、廉平、恩洽、浮护等四县属清远郡。
（2），《嘉庆一统志》卷442?广州府?古迹?威正废县：“在清远县西北（按：当为西南之误）。…县志，有威正山在县西南，故威正县盖在其侧。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，164册）。宣统元年《广东地舆全图》清远县图：威正山位置在今广东省清远县西南与四会县交界处（台湾，成文出版社《中国方志丛书》第108号），今在其侧有地名威整，属四会县，当即威正县故址。
