南宋绍兴九年（1139）三月升茶陵县置。⑴治所即今湖南茶陵县驻地城关镇。嘉定四年（1211）起，与衡州共辖茶陵、酃县两县。⑵元至元十九年（1282）升为茶陵州。⑶
⑴《建炎以来系年要录》卷127：绍兴九年三月癸卯，“升衡州茶陵县为军，以知县兼军使。县当江西、湖南境上，其地方二千余里，皆深山大泽。在唐尝为云州。至是，湖南诸司言：比年寇盗多，民不安业，请建为军。故有是命。”
⑵《舆地纪胜》卷55《荆湖南路》：“酃县，《衡阳志》不载。紧，望。《国朝会要》云：开禧嘉定间置酃县。”（中华书局，第3册，第2010页）
