西汉景帝中元五年（前145年），沅陵侯国亡后，国除，⑴复为沅陵县。治所在今湖南沅陵县驻地沅陵镇南沙水溜一带。⑵属武陵郡。新莽天凤元年（公元14年），改名沅陆县。⑶
⑴《汉书》卷16《高惠高后文功臣表第四》：“孝景中五年，哀侯周嗣，薨，亡后。”（北京，中华书局，第2册，第621页）
⑵《水经?沅水注》：“沅水又东迳县故治北，移县治，县之旧城置都尉府，因冈傍阿，势尽川陆，临沅对酉，二川之交会也。”
