唐武德四年（621年）复置，元元贞元年（1295年）升为余姚州，治今浙江余姚市。
唐武德四年（621年）复置，为姚州治，七年（624年）属越州（625年），天宝元年（742年）属会稽郡，乾元元年（758年）复属越州（1）五代吴越同（2）。北宋太平兴国三年（978年）钱氏归宋，照旧不改。南宋绍兴元年（1131年）属绍兴府（3）。元至元十三年（1276年）属绍兴路，元贞元年（1295年年）升为余姚州（4）。治今浙江余姚市（5）。
