五代梁开平二年（908年）吴越钱氏分剡县置，至1911年不改，治今浙江新昌县。
五代梁开平二年（908年）吴越钱氏分剡县置，属越州（1）。北宋太平兴国三年（978年）钱氏归宋，照旧不改。南宋绍兴元年（1131年）属绍兴府（2）。元至元十三年（1276年）属绍兴路（3），至正二十六年十二月（1367年）朱元璋又属绍兴府（4）。顺治三年（1646年）入清至1911年不改（5）。治今浙江新昌县（6）。
