宋泰始元年（465年），以临贺郡更名（1）。领县数、郡治暂缺。辖境主体在湖南、广西境内，包括今广东省封开县原开建县部分和怀集县西部地区（2）。齐建元元年（479年）复名临贺郡（3）。

（1），《宋书》卷38?州郡志四?湘州刺史?临庆内史：“吴分苍梧立为临贺郡，属广州，晋成帝度荆州，宋文帝元嘉二十九年，度广州，三十年，复度湘州。明帝改名。”领县九：临贺；冯乘；富川；封阳；兴安；谢沐；宁新；开建，“文帝分封阳立宋昌、宋兴、开建、武化、生生、永固、绥南七县。后又分开建、武化、宋昌三县立宋建郡，属广州。孝武大明元年悉省，唯余开建县；抚宁。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1134页）。
《太平寰宇记》封州?开建县：“汉封阳县，属苍梧郡。晋永嘉三年析置开建县，属南靖郡。隋大业十一年，因贼废。唐武德五年，依旧置，仍隶封州。”（金陵书局，光绪八年刊本，29册。）
据《寰宇记》作晋永嘉三年置开建县。隶属关系据《宋书》，西晋属广州临贺郡，东晋成帝咸和元年属荆州临贺郡，宋文帝元嘉二十九年以开建、武化、宋昌三县立宋建郡，属广州，三十年属湘州宋建郡。孝武帝大明元年悉省，唯余开建县，仍属湘州临贺郡。明帝泰始元年以郡更名，属湘州临庆郡。

（3），《南齐书》卷15?州郡志下?湘州?临贺郡，领有“临贺、冯乘、富川、封阳、谢沐、兴安、宁新、开建、抚宁”等九县。（北京，中华书局，1972年，1册，288页）。《宋书》明帝改临贺郡为临庆郡，《南齐书》复为临贺郡，作齐建元元年复旧郡名。",
