唐贞观九年（635年），以南石州更名（1）。领石龙、陵罗、龙化、罗辩四县。州治石龙县，治所即今广东省化州县。境域相当今广东省化州县全境（2）。天宝元年（742年），更名陵水郡（3）。

（1），《旧唐书》卷41?岭南道?辩州：“隋高凉郡之石龙县。武德五年，置罗州，移治石城县。于旧所置南石州，领石龙、陵罗、龙化、罗辩、慈廉、罗肥六县。贞观九年，改南石州为辩州，省慈廉、肥罗二县。天宝元年，改陵水郡。乾元元年，复为辩州。旧领县四，天宝后领县三：石龙，州所治，汉高凉县地，属合浦郡，秦象郡地，武德五年属罗州，六年改属辩州。罗陵，武德五年置罗州，六年改为南石州也。龙化，武德五年分置也。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1744页）
