唐天宝元年（742年），以冈州改名（1）。领新会、义宁二县。州治新会县，治所即今广东省新会县。辖境相当今广东省江门市，新会县，鹤山县，开平县，台山县境域（2）。乾元元年（758年），复为冈州（3）。

（1），《旧唐书》卷41?岭南道?广州：“隋南海郡。武德四年，讨平萧铣，置广州总管府，管广、东衡、洭、南绥、冈五州，并南康总管。…贞观…十三年…省冈州，以义宁、新会二县并属广州。其年，又以义宁、新会二县立冈州。”冈州：“隋南海郡之新会县。武德四年，平萧铣置冈州，领新会、封平、义宁三县。贞观五年（按：据《旧唐书》广州及《新唐书》广州，当为贞观十三年），州废，以新会、义宁属广州，省封平、封乐二县。其年，又立冈州，割广州之新会、义宁来属。又立封乐县。天宝元年改为义宁郡。乾元元年复为冈州。”领县二：新会、义宁。新会：汉南海郡地。晋置新会郡。改置封州，又改为允州，又改为冈州。隋末废，并入广州。武德四年，复为冈州。旧治盆源城。贞观十三年，废冈州，县属广州。其年，复置州于今治也。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1711-171（2），1716页）。
