唐天宝元年（742年）改润州为丹阳郡，治丹徒县，领丹徒、丹阳、延陵、句容、江宁、金坛六县（1）。至德元年（756年）为江南东道节度使治（2）。二年割江宁县置江宁郡，丹阳郡领丹徒、丹阳、延陵、句容、金坛五县，辖境缩小。乾元元年（758年）改为润州（3）。
