东晋永昌元年（322年）徙置，治江陵（今湖北江陵县）。（1）领有南郡、武陵、天门等郡。（2）咸和三年（328年）湘州长沙、衡阳、湘东、邵陵、零陵、建昌等郡并入荆州。（3）四年（329年）徙治巴陵县（今湖南岳阳县）。（4）

（1）《宋书》卷37《州郡志三?荆州》荆州刺史：“陶侃前治沔阳，后治武昌，王廙治江陵。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1117页）按：据《资治通鉴》卷89《晋纪十四》永昌元年（322年）：王敦以“王廙为荆州刺史”。（北京，中华书局，1956年，7册，2905页）按：建兴三年（315年）王廙为荆州刺史治江陵。现复为荆州刺史，姑作也治江陵（今湖北江陵县）。
（2）《晋书》卷15《地理志下》：荆州领有江夏、南郡、襄阳、南阳、新城、魏兴、上庸、建平、宜都、南平、武陵、天门、长沙、衡阳、湘东、零陵、邵陵、桂阳、武昌、安成等郡国，太康中增领顺阳（本南乡）、义阳郡。扬州下又曰：“惠帝元康元年（291年），有司奏，荆、扬二州疆土广远，统理尤难，于是割扬州之豫章、鄱阳、庐陵、临川、南康、建安、晋安，荆州之武昌、桂阳、安成，合十郡，因江水之名而置江州。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，2册，454——458、462——463页）当武昌、桂阳、安成三郡另属江州。《宋书》卷37《州郡志三?湘州》湘州刺史下曰：“晋怀帝永嘉元年（307年），分荆州之长沙、衡阳、湘东、邵陵、零陵、营阳、建昌，江州之桂阳八郡立，治临湘。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1129页）按：当荆州长沙、衡阳、湘东、邵陵、零陵等郡另属湘州。则当时荆州应领有南郡、武陵、天门等郡。
（3）《宋书》卷37《州郡志三?湘州》湘州刺史：“晋怀帝永嘉元年（307年），分荆州之长沙、衡阳、湘东、邵陵、零陵、营阳（因《晋志》无，姑作当时无此郡，见营阳郡考）、建昌，江州之桂阳八郡立，治临湘（今湖南长沙市）。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1129页）《晋书》卷15《地理志下》广州：“怀帝永嘉元年，又以临贺、始兴、始安三郡凡二十县为湘州。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，2册，468页）又《宋书》卷37《州郡志三?湘州》湘州刺史：“成帝咸和三年（328年）省。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1129页）而《资治通鉴》卷94《晋纪十六》咸和四年（329年）二月：“壬寅，以湘州并荆州。”（北京，中华书局，1956年，7册，2968页）按：故作咸和三年（328年）湘州长沙、衡阳、湘东、邵陵、零陵、建昌等郡并入荆州。
