唐乾元元年（758年）置，治苏州（今江苏苏州市）。领有昇、润、江、苏、常、杭、湖州。（1）二年（759年）增领宣、歙、饶三州。上元二年（761年）改置浙江西道观察使。（2）
注：
（1）《新唐书》卷68《方镇表五》：乾元元年（758年）置浙江西道节度兼江宁军使，领昇、润、宣、歙、饶、江、苏、常、杭、湖十州，治昇州，寻徙治苏州（今江苏苏州市），未几，罢领宣、歙、饶三州。（北京，中华书局，1975年，6册，1903页）按：“治昇州”、“领宣、歙、饶三州”，因为时短，故不计。
（2）《新唐书》卷68《方镇表五》：上元二年（761年），“浙江西道观察使徙治宣州”。按：清吴廷燮《唐方镇年表》（二）卷5《浙西》，此时未见浙江西道节度使。当作此年废节度使。",
